Want to play that cool song you've got in your music library, but don't know the chords? One option would be for you to go to your local music store and get the published sheet music for the song you want. (which is never a bad idea by the way...) However, if you want to play lots of popular music, this option can get expensive, and time-consuming. Also, chances are high that the music you want to play doesn't even have sheet music available.

Another option to consider is Sienzo's Digital Music Mentor, software that allows you to create guitar chords as well as bass guitar tablature from sound files on your computer. This software can benefit guitarists, bass players, as well as keyboard players. We found the software was pretty slick and worked moderately well for our test songs. If you want to take it for a test-run we recommend you take a look at the free trial download they provide on their site. The trial version's limitations include not being able to print or save the music notation, not showing all chords in the chord dialog, and only being able to analyze the first 30 seconds of the song. Otherwise, it has full functionality.

Features

One of the great things about DMM is it's so easy to use: Here are the steps involved in getting started with DMM: You start the program, click on the "load" button, choose your favorite song, click on the "analyze" button and you're done.

DMM supports many different types of music files including .mp3, .wma, .cda, .voc, as well as .wav. If you want to use songs from your iTunes library (AAC files), you may have to burn them to a CD and then re-import them as .mp3s to use them with DMM.

Sienzo also makes it easy to transpose the music lower or higher.

It is worth noting that Sienzo's software is unfortunately not compatible with Macs.

Support

For support options, Sienzo features live tech support, an online FAQ, as well as the usual email support option. However, whenever we tried to get a hold of them, they were never available to talk, nor did they ever respond to our emails, which is disappointing.

Warranty

If you have any issues with Sienzo's Digital Music Mentor, you or supposed to be able to contact customer care within 30 days and you can get a 100% refund with no questions asked. However, due to our comments above, I wouldn't count on that being an option.

Price

Sienzo's site allows you to only purchase the downloadable version. You can place your order using Paypal or over the phone however. They also distribute their software to a select few brick-and-mortar music stores.

Conclusion

Sienzo's Software is very expensive for what it is, but if you think it might make your guitar playing more enjoyable, it might be worth your while. Check out their free trial version to see how it works.

Review Summary

Sienzo Digital Music Mentor is a nifty tool that converts MP3s into Guitar Tablature. It worked decent in our tests, but you mileage may vary.
